Two volumes of holograph and manuscript poems and essays. One volume contains poems by Drinker on the subjects of love, domestic life, friendships, and fallen soldiers, and writings by Dryden, Ianthe, and others, written or copied at Albany and Minerva, New York, and dated 1824 May 15 to Nov 20. A manuscript note in an unidentified hand laid in the volume states that Drinker was born in 1807, was married to Walter Montgomery in 1824, and following Montgomery's death she married William Waln Drinker of Philadelphia in 1827. The second volume, containing holograph writings dating from 1821 to 1829, has a manuscript title page reading, "Original Rhymes Written at Sundry Times by Wyoming." The volume includes "The Harp of the Pine Swamp" by "Pindar the Younger," dated 1825, with introductory comments; essays, including one about John Cleves Symmes and an essay on Quakers which introduces several poems. The volume also contains notes on deaths of family members, arithmetic computations, and juvenile drawings. A manuscript "Song" by William Waln Drinker and an unidentified manuscript poem in Johanna Drinker's hand are laid in.

John Cleves Symmes, a native of New Jersey, was the nephew of the noted jurist of the same name. He entered the army in 1802 and was commissioned a captain in the War of 1812. He left military service in 1816 to reside in St. Louis and embark on a brief career of supplying the army and trading with the Fox Indians.
